Annual Halloween surf off aims to help raise money for high school surf team
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A costume contest is set to make a big splash on Oahu’s North Shore.
The fifth annual Turtle Bay Halloween Surf Off, presented by the Jamie O’Brien Surf Experience, will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Organizers said all ages and skill levels are invited to dress in their best costumes and compete for glory, laughs, and prizes.
“This event brings together everything we love — community, fun, creativity, and the ocean,” said Jamie O’Brien. “It’s not every day you see a pirate dropping in on a wave next to a taco. That’s the kind of Halloween wonder we’re all about and we’re psyched to keep the tradition going, while supporting our local scholastic surfers.”
Athletes will be judged on both their surfing skills and how creative their costumes are.
Registration is $20, and can be done here.
O’Brien, a graduate of Kahuku High School, said all proceeds will go to the school’s surf team.
“It’s about bringing the community together,” O’Brien said. “And then most importantly, trying to raise money for the Kahuku High School Surf Team. It’s just a really good event. Family-friendly, fun, and everyone dresses up in costumes and just celebrates the holiday season.”
There are three divisions that costumed surfers can enter:
- Tandem Division (all ages)
- Goblin Division (Ages 14 and under)
- Open Division (15 and older)
Prizes will be given out to the winners of each division, which includes:
- Custom-made trophies by a local artist
- A round of golf at Turtle Bay Golf
- Gift certificates to North Shore Surf Shop
- An overnight stay at The Ritz-Carlton Oahu, Turtle Bay
Organizers said more prizes will also be available from their sponsors.
“We just have so many epic sponsors this year that’s really kind of helping, you know, do like a record-breaking amount of money that we’re raising for the kids,” O’Brien added.
