HPD: Police K-9 ‘recovering at home’ after being stabbed during barricade situation
WAIANAE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A police K-9 dog that was stabbed multiple times during an intense barricade situation with a suspect in Waianae is “recovering at home,” HPD said.
The agency thanked the community for offering well wishes for the dog, named Zach.
Deputy sheriffs arrested suspect Howard Abraham, 50, after the 20-hour standoff. He’s been booked for first-degree attempted murder and causing injury to a law enforcement animal.
Officials said the incident began around 10 a.m. on Thursday when deputy sheriffs tried to serve an eviction order at a unit in the Uluwehi Condominiums on Ala Walua in Waianae.
When authorities entered the apartment, officials said Abraham allegedly launched an arrow, which hit a sheriff but did not injure him.
That’s when officials said the suspect barricaded himself in the home.
About five hours into the standoff, the HPD K-9 was injured. Authorities said the dog sustained stab wounds to its head and neck.
The K-9 was rushed to an animal hospital to undergo emergency surgery.
At 6:30 a.m. Friday, officials said a SWAT team went into the unit and tased the suspect and worked with law enforcement to bring him into custody.
HPD said the suspect sustained minor injuries after initially reporting he was not injured.
Meanwhile, no Honolulu police officers were hurt in the barricade situation.
