WAIANAE (HawaiiNewsNow) - An hours-long standoff has come to an end with a suspect in custody, Honolulu police said in an update on their social media platforms Friday morning.

Sheriffs took custody of the suspect, who has been identified as 50-year-old Howard Abraham, and booked him at their facility for first-degree attempted murder and causing injury to a law enforcement animal.

Officials said the incident began around 10 a.m. on Thursday when sheriffs tried to serve an eviction order at a unit in the Uluwehi Condominiums on Ala Walua in Waianae.

When authorities entered the apartment, officials said Abraham allegedly launched an arrow which hit a sheriff but did not injure him. That’s when officials said the suspect barricaded himself in the home.

HPD alerted the public about the incident shortly after 4 p.m. on Thursday, leading to a heavy police presence, including state sheriffs and Honolulu Emergency Medical Services personnel.

About five hours into the standoff, police told Hawaii News Now that an HPD K-9 was injured by a lone man in the apartment unit.

Honolulu EMS treated the canine for its injuries, which appeared to be around its head and neck. The K-9 was rushed to an animal hospital to undergo emergency surgery after being stabbed.

At 6:30 a.m. Friday, officials said a SWAT team went into the unit and tased the suspect and worked with law enforcement to bring him into custody.

HPD said the suspect sustained minor injuries after initially reporting he was not injured.

Meanwhile, no Honolulu police officers were hurt in the barricade situation.

Due to the active investigation, the state Department of Education announced that classes were cancelled at Waianae Intermediate on Friday as a precautionary measure due to the campus’ close proximity to the scene. The school had activated a soft lockdown Thursday afternoon around 3:20 p.m. when the incident occurred in the neighboring community.

No other public schools in the area are impacted at this time, officials said.

An investigation remains ongoing.
