FBI report: 470 Hawaii residents over 60 fell victim to online scams last year

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hundreds of Hawaii kupuna were victimized in online scams last year.

That’s according FBI’s annual Elder Fraud Report released this week.

Authorities found 470 victims 60 or older in Hawaii in 2021 with total losses in excess of $11.6 million.

Across the country, over $1.7 billion dollars was lost, which is a 74% jump from the previous year.

The FBI says the rising trend is alarming, and highlighting the issue is key to ensuring proper resources will be allocated to the problem. Family members are also urged to do what they can to educate their loved ones and keep them safe.
