2 men that led Kauai police on a chase, prompting a school lockdown identified

KAPAA, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - The two men arrested after a police chase on Kauai Tuesday afternoon have been identified.

Authorities say 34-year-old Travis Shimomura of Kapaa was arrested alongside 23-year-old Kylie Lanning of Anahola.

It all started around 2 p.m. Tuesday when Shimomura allegedly approached a vehicle in which a 26-year-old Kapaa woman sat with a 51-year-old male passenger. They were outside of St. Catherine School in Kapaa when police say Shimomura threatened them with a gun.

The school was put on lockdown and Shimomura and Lanning fled up Kawaihau Road to Lihi Park. Police utilized scent-tracking canine ‘King’ and Air 1 to aid in their pursuit.

Once police spotted them near the park, the pair turned onto Olohena Road before abandoning their vehicle at Waipouli Road. Witnesses said they were then seen fleeing through a Waipouli Road property and into a nearby pasture.

Police said as they entered the property, they found a pistol on the ground in a bag with drug paraphernalia.

Shimomura and Lanning were eventually located and arrested without incident. After their arrest, the lockdown at St. Catherine’s was lifted.

The two suspects now face charges of first-degree terroristic threatening, firearms offenses, and resisting an order to stop.

Shimomura was placed in police cellblock with bail set at $135,000. Police said he was also arrested for a separate bench warrant for parole violation with no option of bail. He was transferred to the Kauai Community Correctional Facility where he is awaiting a court date.

Lanning also remains in a police cellblock with bail set at $125,000. He was also taken in on a separate $5,000 bench warrant for violating his conditions of bail.

The investigation is ongoing.
