Four halau Honor Hawaii royalty in Honolulu hula concert
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Four hālau are coming together to honor Hawaiian royalty whose music remains part of Hawai’i’s cultural legacy.
Kumu hula Niuli’i Heine of Na Pualei O Likolehua previewed Nā Lani ʻEhā Hawaiian music concert and hula performance on Hawaii News Now Sunrise.
“It’s a four-year contract,” said Heine. “So every year, they (each hālau) will get a new aliʻi, and what they’re responsible for is doing a presentation of a hula, an ʻoli and a mele... of that royal.”
Originally started by Kumu Hula Leina’ala Kalama Heine, Heine continues her mother’s legacy with Nā Lani ʻEhā to celebrate Kalākaua, Liliʻuokalani, Likelike and Leleiohoku.
Four hālau will be joining to represent aliʻi:
- Nā Pua ʻĀhihi Lehua Mai Pihanakalani (Kumu ʻAuliʻi Heine Hirahara)
- Kilipohe Nā Lei Lehua (Kumu Liko Cooke & Kumu Sky Gora)
- Kaleilehuaikealoonālani (Kumu Nani Dudoit)
- Nā Pualei O Likolehua (Kumu Niuliʻi Heine)
The concert takes place at the McKinley High School auditorium on Sunday, Nov. 8 from 3 to 6 p.m.
