HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Department of Transportation Services is raising awareness about pedestrian safety.

DTS has posted signs that show how often passing drivers stop for pedestrians at eight high-traffic locations across Oahu.

The “Be Prepared to Stop for Pedestrians” signs are part of the Oahu Vision Zero initiative to prevent casualties on the roads.

The signs include the highest recorded stopping rate at each location.

This sign campaign is one way DTS recognizes October as Pedestrian Safety Month.

The City generated the stopping rates of drivers in October by calculating the number of drivers that stopped for a DTS worker who crossed the following roads in marked crosswalks during a one-hour period.

  • California Avenue near Makani Avenue, Wahiawā: 74% most recent rate; 81% record high
  • Kailua Road near Ho’ola’i Street, Kailua: 69% most recent rate; 69% record high
  • Lunalilo Home Road near Kaumakani Street, Hawaii Kai: 64% most recent rate; 64% record high
  • Moanalua Road near Ualo Street, Waimalu: 65% most recent rate; 65% record high
  • North King Street near Harvey Lane, Kalihi: 75% most recent rate; 76% record high
  • Punchbowl Street near Miller Street, Downtown: 77% most recent rate; 78% record high
  • Renton Road near Pahika Street, ʻEwa: 58% most recent rate; 72% record high
  • University Avenue near Kuilei Street, Mō’ili’ili: 47% most recent rate; 57% record high

DTS found that an average of 66% of drivers stopped for pedestrians at the studied intersections, an improvement from just 53% before the campaign began.
