Teachers union backs state senator for congressional seat

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA) says it is supporting state Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole in his bid to represent Hawaii’s First Congressional District.

In a press conference at the state Capitol Friday, Osa Tui Jr., president of the teachers union, said they need someone in Congress who understands the true struggles of Hawaii’s residents, and is willing to stand up against the Trump administration.

“For far too long, we’ve needed a fighter in this seat who is willing to stand strong against an authoritarian regime intent on weakening, and even destroying, our democracy,” he said.

Keohokalole said if elected, he plans to champion educators, students, and working families.

“Hawaii is a small state. We have a small delegation, and if we’re small, we have to be mighty,” Keohokalole said. “We need to be able to push back with diligence and bravery against the craziness that’s happening every day.”

Keohokalole is among the challengers facing incumbent U.S. Rep. Ed Case, who is seeking his seventh full term.

Case has been criticized by the Democratic Party for crossing party lines to support Republicans’ efforts, like the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would mandate proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections.

Also in the race is veteran state lawmaker Della Au Bellati, who announced her campaign last month.

The primary election is set for August 2026.
