Wrong-way driver killed in early-morning crash on H-1 Freeway identified
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 25-year-old mother of two died early Sunday morning after police said she drove her vehicle in the wrong direction on the H-1 Freeway and hit another vehicle.
The Honolulu medical examiner identified her on Tuesday as Kylee Chun.
According to Honolulu police, the crash happened at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday as Chun was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes, just west of the Punahou Street overpass.
HPD said her vehicle hit another one that was driven by a 77-year-old man who was headed westbound.
HPD said Chun was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
Bystanders extracted her from her vehicle. She was taken in critical condition to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The male motorist was reported in good condition.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Chun’s family with funeral and memorial expenses, as well as to support her two young sons, ages 5 and 3.
According to the page, Chun and her family moved to Hawaii from California in January after surviving the wildfires there.
The H-1’s westbound lanes were closed in the area during the investigation.
It’s not known whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors to the crash. Speed is not believed to be a contributing factor.
The death is Oahu’s 44th traffic fatality of the year, compared to 22 at the same time last year.
