HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - A reported gas leak on the campus of Campbell High School in Ewa Beach forced school administrators to temporarily self-evacuate the campus on Tuesday, according to a spokesperson with the state Department of Education.

Students at nearby Ilima Intermediate School and Pohakea Elementary School were also taken away from their classrooms while crews worked to shut off gas to the line that had been ruptured.

Students were taken to the football field at Campbell High School’s athletic complex or to other large fields on their respective campuses, the spokesperson said.

The gas leak was reported just before 1:30 p.m. after construction workers apparently ruptured a gas line, Honolulu Fire Department authorities said. The all-clear to return to class was given at around 2 p.m.

One of the fire department’s hazardous materials crews was on scene trying to determine whether it was a propane or natural gas line that had been ruptured. At least three units with the fire department have responded to the scene, authorities say.
