HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A major expansion of The Queen’s Medical Center – West Oahu has reached a new construction milestone as the hospital works to meet growing demand for emergency care.

The Queen’s Health Systems held a topping-off ceremony Friday, Oct. 30, marking the placement of the final structural beam on its new three-story facility.

The 80,000-square-foot expansion will more than double the size of the hospital’s emergency department, adding 32 care spaces for a total of 55.

The project will also add 48 private inpatient rooms across two floors, bringing the hospital’s total to 152 patient rooms.

Located in Ewa, Queen’s-West operates the second-busiest emergency department in the state, behind The Queen’s Medical Center – Punchbowl.

Hospital officials said emergency department visits have increased by an average of 5% annually over the past five years.

“As our community grows, so does the need for timely, accessible emergency care,” said Robin Kalohelani, chief operating officer for Queen’s-West and Queen’s-Wahiawā.

The expansion will also feature advanced imaging capabilities and specialized treatment areas designed to improve patient care.

Construction is expected to be completed in late 2028.
