Nonprofits, houses of worship may qualify for Hurricane Lowell aid

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Private nonprofits in Kauai and Maui counties may be eligible for federal disaster assistance following Hurricane Lowell.
FEMA said its Public Assistance program is available to certain nonprofits impacted by the Sept. 6-9 storm, including houses of worship.
The program can reimburse eligible organizations for costs tied to emergency protective measures, debris removal and repairs to disaster-damaged facilities.
Eligible nonprofits may include hospitals, utilities, senior and community centers, private schools, day care facilities, assisted living facilities, homeless shelters and performing arts centers.
Organizations that sustained damage are encouraged to submit a Request for Public Assistance as soon as possible.
The deadline to apply is Nov. 6.
Nonprofits that need help with the application can contact the state through the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency.
More information is available through FEMA’s Public Assistance program website.
