Mom who survived school shooting comforts son during school shooting in Oregon
BEND, Ore. (CNN) - Parents in Bend are comforting their children after last week’s deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School. One mother said she understands what her son experienced because she survived a school shooting herself.
Michelle, whose last name was withheld, said she found out about Thursday’s shooting when her fifth-grade son called and texted her from his Apple Watch, saying there was a shooter.
In the text message, Michelle told her son everything would be OK. She also told him about her own history of surviving a school shooting.
Michelle was a freshman at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon, California, when a gunman opened fire in 2001. Two teachers and three students were wounded.
Michelle said she was always nervous when she dropped her sons off at school, even before last Thursday’s shooting.
