LIHUE (HawaiiNewsNow) - Travelers at Lihue Airport should expect temporary changes to passenger pickup areas as construction shifts to a new section of the terminal.

Beginning Monday, the pickup area in front of Baggage Claim A will reopen to ground transportation shuttles, taxis and rideshares.

The area had been closed since mid-February for pavement, curb, lane marking, signage and ADA improvements.

Construction will now move to the pickup area in front of Baggage Claim B, which will close starting Oct. 19.

During the work, passenger pickups will be diverted to the Baggage Claim A area.

HDOT said the improvements are part of a larger employee parking lot project at the airport.

The project includes paving an existing gravel overflow lot, adding marked parking stalls, lighting, access control, security cameras and drainage improvements.

Once complete, the 2.3-acre lot is expected to accommodate up to 347 employee vehicles, about 117 more than before.

HDOT said the added capacity could allow more spaces in the main employee lot to be used for public parking during peak travel periods.

Construction is expected to continue through April 2027.

Drivers and pedestrians are urged to use caution around construction zones.
