HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Flooding temporarily closed Kamehameha Highway from Waikane Valley Road to Waiahole Valley Road for roughly two hours Sunday afternoon.

The Honolulu Police Department closed the highway in both directions at around 3:45 p.m. due to the flooding, with water reaching about 2.5 feet over the road.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning until 5:30 p.m. as heavy showers spread over Windward Oahu, with heavy rain falling at 1 to 3 inches per hour over the Central Koolau Mountains.

The U.S. Geological Survey estimated Waiahole Stream reached its highest level at over 16 feet just after 3 p.m.

Police and fire crews have responded to the area.

The Honolulu Fire Department said crews assisted motorists out of their vehicles as water from the Waikane Stream flowed over the highway.

No one was injured.

As of 4:30 p.m., it was around 13 to 14 feet. View the stream level data here.

HFD said by 4:45 p.m., water levels were receding.

As of 5:23 p.m., officials said the road had been reopened, and both directions of traffic were cleared.
