HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A comfort station at Keehi Lagoon Park is set to be demolished after the city says it poses ongoing safety concerns.

The city says the comfort station at 465 Lagoon Drive was heavily vandalized in 2016 and has remained in disrepair ever since.

Officials say its removal will eliminate safety hazards, reduce the risk of pest infestations and unauthorized use, and enhance the safety and appearance of the park.

Preparation for demolition began Monday and is expected to be completed by mid-October.

The project involves removing the existing structure and restoring the site with topsoil and grass.

A nearby playground will close during the construction period.

Nearby residents are advised to expect increased noise and dust. The public is asked to stay clear of the work zone and follow all signage.

The project’s design cost $30,000 and construction about $111,000, according to the city.
