HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - In Upcountry Maui, firefighters continue to keep the Crater Road fire, which began a week ago, from spreading.

According to the Maui Fire Department, as of 7 p.m. on Wednesday, the fire remains 80% contained and has burned 574 acres with no additional fire growth.

Officials say, however, several hot spots remain within the fire perimeter, and the problematic, inaccessible eucalyptus grove continues to smolder.

Officials say MFD’s Air 1 and Air 2 dropped water to quell hot spots in portions that ground crews cannot reach, and nighttime drone flights to the area are also planned.

Crater Road and Haleakala National Park remain closed.
