Local Connection: Dennis Francis on Oahu's homeless issue

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

When we were looking for someone to share of the burden of putting a bright spotlight on the shameful issue of homelessness in our state, we found a willing partner in Dennis Francis of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Dennis recognized immediately that if we were to team up and direct our editorial teams to look at all aspects of this problem, we could make a difference. And we have. After months of delay, the Kakaako encampment is finally torn down and many of those who made a home there are in shelters.

That wouldn't have happened without our laser-like focus on the problem. And we are not finished yet.

As publisher and president of the Star-Advertiser, Dennis wields considerable influence but he does so in smart ways. He cares deeply about Hawaii and its problems and realizes that it is the role of the media to not only hold our elected and appointed officials accountable but to make our home a better place.

On the business side, few realize how difficult it was to combine the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and Honolulu Advertiser and keep the quality of the combined newspaper high. In addition, he made wise purchases of publications on the Big Island and Kauai and continued to grow the publishing business in Hawaii while bucking the national trend.

For that he was deservedly named Editor and Publisher Magazine's Publisher of the Year.

From his philanthropic endeavors to his more recent role as the board chairman of the Chamber of Commerce Hawaii, Dennis Francis has used his bully pulpit well.

I am honored to stand alongside him to right the wrongs we see all around us. His strong leadership on the issues of the day does Hawaii proud.
