Homeless man arrested for allegedly harassing monk seal

WAIANAE, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Honolulu police arrested 40-year-old Jamie Rice, who is accused of harassing a monk seal.

Rice is homeless and was caught allegedly harassing an endangered Hawaiian monk seal on a beach in Waianae near the McDonalds.

At approximately 8 a.m. Thursday morning, police said Rice was laying down next to the monk seal and refused to move when authorities told him to get away from the animal.

Rice was arrested for resisting arrest and was cited for the misdemeanor crime, which carries a maximum fine of $2,000 and up to a year in jail.
