HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - This coming Tuesday and Wednesday have been designated as First Alert Weather days.

An area of low pressure developing southwest of the islands will move closer to Hawaii over the next couple of days – bringing instability, deep tropical moisture and potentially thunderstorms.

Showers could start late Monday. Rainfall rates of 2.5 inches per hour are possible, as well as strong winds associated with the thunderstorms.

All islands should prepare for very wet weather. In anticipation, expect the National Weather Service to issue flood watches in the next day or two.

The stormy weather may be hard to imagine with current conditions so beautiful. There will be light to moderate trade winds, lots of sunshine and just a few showers tonight, tomorrow and most of Monday.

North Shore waves will build rapidly this afternoon as a medium-period NNW swell arrives. Surf will reach near seasonal average during the peak tonight into Sunday. South shores will see a series of SSW swells keeping wave heights about seasonal average. A bigger south is possible late next week.
