KIHEI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A blessing was held on Friday to mark the first phase of construction for a new high school in Kihei, Maui.
The first phase will take about a year and a half to complete and includes the high school's roads, pipes and grading.
The ceremony was held by general contractor Goodfellow Bros., Inc. who won the contract for infrastructure improvements.
Phase two of the school will include an administration building, library, cafeteria, physical education room, classrooms, two parking lots, a clay court and a temporary field.
The third, and final phase is expected to bring a gymnasium and other buildings for electives like music, and industrial, visual and digital arts.
The brand new high school will also have a track as well as outdoor basketball and tennis courts.
South Maui's future high school is set to open for the 2021-2022 school year.
The new school comes as the student population on Maui increases, putting a strain on some DOE campuses.
In the upcoming school year, Maui High's student body is expected to swell to more than 2,000 students.
