HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Rail project has been plagued with a number of problems since it's inception. But the largest problem looming over the transportation system has been its budget, and more specifically, how to find the billions needed to finish it.
Mayor Kirk Caldwell has been lobbying to extend the General Excise tax to help fund the project, but the last legislative session ended with no agreement on extending the tax or an alternate way of finding the money needed.
