911 caller arrested for assaulting EMS crew in ambulance

KALIHI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted two EMS crew members inside an ambulance.

Early Sunday, Kainalu Ching called 911 saying he was having a problem with his pacemaker and needed immediate assistance, police said.

Emergency crews responded to Ching's Perry Street home in Kalihi.

The 32-year-old was loaded into the back of the ambulance and transported to Queen's Medical Center shortly after 1 a.m.

But when the ambulance pulled into the parking lot, authorities say Ching started assaulting the EMT in the back of the ambulance.

The paramedic who was driving heard the commotion and went to the back to help. In the process of trying to subdue Ching, the driving paramedic was also assaulted.

Sources say Ching punched one of the first responders and bit the other.

Ching now faces two second-degree assault charges.
