HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A mariner who had been adrift for five days after his catamaran was damaged by a storm was rescued off Kauai on Sunday.

The Coast Guard said it rescued the mariner, aboard a 28-foot sailing catamaran, and towed the boat to Port Allen.

The boater was uninjured, but had been running low on supplies.

The Coast Guard got the mariner's mayday call about 5 p.m. Saturday. Coast Guard crews were able to locate the vessel, Hula Hoop, with a helicopter, and tow it to shore about 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

Chief Petty Officer Jerrod Sneller of Coast Guard Sector Honolulu said the case illustrates the importance of boating survival gear.

The mariner called for help Saturday over VHF-FM Channel 16, after finally drifting close enough to shore to do so.

But an emergency position indicating radio beacon, Sneller said, is vital for longer boating trips because it can connect to satellites and deliver a signal indicating a distress call and location in seconds.
