WAILEA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) -

"All of a sudden, out of nowhere, bam," that is how Evonne Cashman describes the moment a shark attacked her while she was snorkeling off of Ulua Beach park on Maui.

Cashman in an interview with MauiNow.com says, "It happened so fast. I didn't see him coming.  I didn't see him leave. He just came and hit me hard, and bit me hard; and I took off swimming to the shore as fast as I could."

During the interview at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Cashman showed off her injuries that included bites marks on her hands and chin.

Officials say at about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, Cashman was 30 feet from the shore in about 10 feet of water when she was attacked.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources and the County of Maui closed off the area a mile in both directions, from Polo Beach to the area fronting the Mana Kai Maui resort.  The area reopened at noon on Thursday.

Cashman tells MauiNow.com that she will be checking out of the hospital today, and will be on Maui through Tuesday.
