HFD: 2 dogs die in raging fire at a Hawaii Kai condo

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire at an apartment complex in Hawaii Kai Tuesday evening.

Crews were called out around around 5:45 p.m. to the building along Hawaii Kai Drive.

The fire broke out in a 6th floor unit within the Naniwa Gardens complex. Neighbors said the unit was engulfed in flames as smoke billowed out.

Despite not having a fire sprinkler system, HFD said the flames were contained to a single unit.

“I saw the building next door burning down, it was crazy,” witness Kevin Lowry said. “I mean it looks pretty bad. Looks like only one place that has damage, which is good.”

Police closed off a portion of Hawaii Kai Drive as more than 60 firefighters worked to get the fire extinguished.

Officials said no one was home at the time the flames sparked, but two dogs were killed in the inferno.

The fire was brought under control just before 6:20 p.m. and fully extinguished by 6:45 p.m.

EMS units did respond, but no one was transported to the hospital. A cause is under investigation.

The American Red Cross is aiding those displaced by the fire.
