HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The motorcyclist involved in a crash along Kaukonahua Road Sunday has become Oahu’s 16th traffic fatality of 2019, according to police.

The crash happened around 12:50 p.m. near the S-turn on Kaukonahua.

Police said the motorcyclist was riding in a pack of four other bikers.

The 26-year-old man killed was operating a Yamaha. A police investigation revealed that upon entering the S-turns, the Yamaha lost control and collided with the guardrail.

The driver was ejected before hitting a signpost and landing in the bushes, police said. Another driver in the pack, a 23-year-old man riding a Suzuki, also lost control, crashed into the same guardrail and fell onto the roadway.

The 26-year-old man was taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition where he later died. The 23-year-old man was taken in serious condition to Wahiawa General Hospital.

Police say it was unclear if they were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

Police do not believe alcohol was involved, but they say speed may be a contributing factor.

Kaukonahua was closed from roughly 1 p.m. until about 3:15 p.m. All lanes have since been reopened.

This is Oahu’s 16th traffic fatality of 2019 compared to 15 this time last year.

The name of the victim has not yet been released.
