Raquel Calo

Born and raised in California’s Central Valley, she grew up immersed in her community. Her love for storytelling began at home, influenced by her strong Filipino heritage and parents who watched the daily news in the Philippines.

From an early age, Raquel shared her culture and experiences through writing, continuing her passion through elementary school, high school, and eventually at California State University, Bakersfield. There, she honed her writing skills graduating with a BA in Public Relations, minor in Journalism….and launched her career as a Multimedia Journalist and weather forecaster at 23ABC in Bakersfield from 2023 to 2025, where she fell in love with storytelling and learned the ins and outs of local news.

After a bittersweet goodbye to California, Raquel was warmly welcomed to Honolulu and joined Hawaii News Now as a reporter and multimedia journalist in the summer of 2025. Reflecting on the move, she says, “I’m so grateful to have this opportunity. Reporting for these islands will be one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences of my career.”

Raquel adds, “I can’t wait to grow with the Hawaii News Now team and learn from the people here.”

A proud journalist, Raquel is dedicated to being part of the community, getting to know the people she reports on, and working hard every day to tell their stories, just as she has done time and time again.

She now spends most of her time at the beach with her dog, Bella Hadid Calo, often with her nose buried in a book. If you see her out and about, don’t hesitate to say hi!
