Marine dies during late-night training exercise near military base, officials say

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN/Gray News) - A Marine died during a late-night training exercise near the Camp Lejeune base, the Marine Corps announced.

Officials said Sgt. Colin Arslanbas, with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, died Thursday night around 11 p.m. in Carteret County, WITN reported.

“Words cannot convey our sorrow for the tragic loss of one of our MEU family members,” said Col. Todd Mahar, 24th MEU commanding officer. “We offer our deepest condolences and unwavering support to his family during this most difficult time.”

Arslanbas enlisted on March 16th, 2020.

He was promoted to the rank of Sgt. on April 1st, 2024 and served as a Reconnaissance Marine with the MSPF, WITN reported.

His decorations include the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

II MEF says the death remains under investigation.
