Julia Louis-Dreyfus is best known for her comic roles in the TV series, SEINFELD and VEEP. But she has also starred in several movies. Her latest film is a comedy-drama directed by Nicole Holofcener called YOU HURT MY FEELINGS. If you’re Julia Louis-Dreyfus, you’ll probably enjoy this film. It’s smartly written, well acted, and very entertaining. Julia plays a modestly successful writer who overhears her always supportive husband tell a friend that he really doesn’t like the novel she’s currently working on. To say she’s upset is an understatement. There are lots of laughs in YOU HURT MY FEELINGS, but at the same time it effectively dramatizes the kind of dilemma we all face with friends and love ones. How can you tell someone a hard truth and not hurt their feelings? (Ward Theater complex only)

Paul Schrader is a 76 year old filmmaker who has been making movies since 1978. I have avoided many of his films because they are often full of suffering and violence. But MASTER GARDENER is much less so; it even has a happy ending. It’s a slow burn of a film in which I could feel the strong emotions of Joel Edgerton as the main character even though he keeps those emotions in check. In short, MASTER GARDNER is the fine work of a masterful writer-director. (Kahala Mall Theaters only)
