THE QUIET GIRL is the first Irish film ever nominated for Best International Feature Film. It’s a delicate and beautiful film about a neglected 9 year old from a large dysfunctional family who is sent away for a summer to stay with her mother’s married middle aged cousin. There she experiences love and acceptance for the first time. THE QUIET GIRL a heartfelt movie with a slow pace and lovely cinematography. And first time actress, Catherine Clinch, is superb as the young girl. If you’d like to see a heartwarming film about lonely people who help each other, check out this bittersweet movie at Kahala Mall. It’ll be gone before next weekend.

The 2023 Academy Awards Telecast happens this Sunday, March 12. Of the ten movies nominated for Best Picture, I would have voted for just two of them. EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE has been winning awards in most of the awards shows this season, so it’s highly favored to take home the Oscar for Best Picture. That surprises me, because although I enjoyed it when I saw it last April, I thought that most audiences would react by saying something like, “What the heck was that?” Because EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE is the weirdest comedy/drama I’ve ever seen, but it’s also wild, exhilarating, and full of creative marital arts action. It’s an exhilarating, mind melting movie. But it’s also a bittersweet family comedy/drama. If you have Showtime, you can see it at no cost. If not you can stream it online for $19.99. But you can buy a DVD on Amazon for $7.50. The only other movie nominated for Best Picture that I would have voted for is THE FABELMAN’S, a slightly fictionalized story of director Steven Spielberg’s early years.
