Terry Hunter reviews EMPIRE OF LIGHT

Paul Schrader is a 76 year old filmmaker who has been making movies since 1978. I have avoided many of his films because they are often full of suffering and violence. But MASTER GARDENER is much less so; it even has a happy ending. It’s a slow burn of a film in which I could feel the strong emotions of Joel Edgerton as the main character even though he keeps those emotions in check. In short, MASTER GARDNER is the fine work of a masterful writer-director. (Kahala Mall Theaters only)

The new movie called ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET is based on the very popular novel of the same name written in 1970 by author Judy Blume. The film and the book are about an eleven year old girl who’s about to go through puberty. And you don’t have to be female or young to enjoy it. This is the most entertaining movie I’ve seen so far this year. When an audience in a movie theater erupts into applause at the end of a film, you know you’ve seen something special. ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, MARGARET is a touching and often funny account of the emotional turmoil the young Margaret goes through that may well remind you of your own youthful hopes and fears.
