The much anticipated new movie, AMSTERDAM, is from five time Oscar nominated filmmaker David O. Russell who hasn’t made a feature film in seven years. Hollywood expected AMSTERDAM to be a big hit, but critics and audiences have been disappointed. The film offers an all star cast that includes Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington plus excellent cinematography. But it’s an odd combination of screwball comedy and idealistic drama, a sprawling, preposterous tall tale told by a talented filmmaker so carried away by his own creativity he forgets that too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. The wacky, overcomplicated plot includes a murder mystery and a conspiracy to topple the American government. AMSTERDAM is a misfire by a very creative director, but I’m glad went to see it.
