Most Hollywood movies are aimed at audiences that range from childhood through middle age. But a new animated film on NETFLIX called APOLLO 10 1/2: A SPACE AGE CHILDHOOD will be best appreciated by people over the age of 55. The film presents an animated re-creation of filmmaker Richard Linklater’s childhood in a Houston suburb in the summer of 1969 when he was 9 years old and American astronauts first landed on the moon. The movie includes his own vivid fantasy of making that trip himself. But most of the movie shows what it was like for him living in a suburb near NASA. For Baby Boomers, the film will be a nostalgic reminder of how different life was back then. For people under the age of 55, it may be no more than a curiosity—if they’re interested at all in what the world was like for their parents or grandparents. APOLLO 10 1/2 isn’t a great film, but it’s well made and for the right audience, it will stir up fond memories of the late 1960’s.
