Comedian Amy Poehler directed LUCI AND DESI, a fascinating documentary that tells how Lucy, a moderately successful movie actress, and Desi, a conga playing bandleader from Cuba, fell in love and created I LOVE LUCY, the 1950’s sitcom that became the longest running TV show of all time. The film makes great use clips from the show, home movies, still photos, and some 20 hours of audio tape the two made years ago to tell their own stories. The couple created I LOVE LUCY so that they could work together instead of her being stuck in Hollywood making “B” films while he was touring with his band. CBS didn’t want Desi to play Lucy’s husband on TV because he was Cuban but relented when the couple’s comedy skits on stage were a big hit. Lucy and Desi both died in the late 1980’s, but I LOVE LUCY lives on. You can watch it on Hallmark and TBS or stream it on sites like Amazon Prime and Hulu. This documentary is streaming only on Amazon Prime.
