Terry Hunter reviews BETTER DAYS

Chinese feature films have been nominated for an Academy Award only three times. BETTER DAYS, one of this year’s five nominees for Best International film, is the first since 1993. BETTER DAYS is a strong, beautifully shot melodrama about a high school girl who is severely bullied until she convinces a young street thug to protect her. The plot is bit hard to follow in some parts, but the leading actress is exceptional. This movie is long and complicated and very emotional, but its creative cinematography and editing, great music, and fine acting won me over. Don’t stop watching when the credits start to roll. There is an epilogue after the credits that delivers the film’s true ending. (Free for Hulu subscribers, $2.99 on Amazon and Vudu)
