Terry Hunter reviews ANOTHER ROUND and NOBODY

Five movies shot outside the U.S. have been nominated for Best International Feature Film at next week’s Academy Awards ceremony. But only one of the five, a Danish film called ANOTHER ROUND, has earned a nomination for Best Director overall: Thomas Vinterberg. ANOTHER ROUND tells the story of four bored and depressed high school teachers who are experiencing mid life crisis. One of them discovers some scientific research that says people function at their best with a slightly increased level of alcohol in their blood. So the four decide their lives might be improved by drinking a glass or two of alcohol off and on all day long. It’s a perverse but fascinating idea that early on really does make a positive difference in their lives. All of them experience a buzz of increased energy and enthusiasm for their teaching and for their personal lives. But it isn’t long before things turn tragically bad. ANOTHER ROUND veers between comedy and tragedy and seems rather muddled overall. It’s worth seeing mainly because lead actor Mads Mikkelsen is both a fine actor and a bonafide movie star. But I don’t think the film deserves its Oscar nominations. (Available on Hulu for subscribers. $3.99 on other streaming platforms)…..A warning: Actor Bob Odenkirk, best known for playing the sleazy lawyer, Saul, in BREAKING BAD and BETTER CALL SAUL, stars in NOBODY, a mediocre action-thriller which wastes his talent. (In Theaters and On Demand)
