Terry Hunter reviews THE FATHER

Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman star in THE FATHER which has been nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Already an Oscar winner for SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, the 83 year old Hopkins gives one of the best performances of his career as an old man struggling with dementia. He’s confused and bewildered much of the time but he’s also in denial about his condition. What makes this movie unique is that in many scenes the filmmaker shows us the world as the old man sees it which makes us experience a disorientation similar to his. His character can seem normal at times, but at other times he’s even lost the ability to recognize Olivia Colman as his daughter Ann. Seen through Anthony’s perceptions, very little is what it seems to be in this disturbing film. It’s not until the final scene the filmmaker clears things up for us. This film is painful to watch, but it’s one of 2020’s best films. ($19.99 rental on most streaming platforms) thunter@hawaiinewsnow.com
