Terry Hunter reviews SUPERNOVA

The new streaming movie called SUPERNOVA takes on the serious topic of early onset dementia. (It’s not about astronomy.) It’s the heartbreaking story of a couple who’ve been together for decades and are now facing the tragedy of Alzheimer’s. Colin Firth has appeared in more than 70 movies and Stanley Tucci has been in more than a hundred. But their emotional performances in this intimate and compassionate drama are among their very best. Stanley Tucci is Tusker. Colin Firth is Sam. They’re on a road trip through the Lake District of England where they’ll also visit Sam’s family. Tusker has early onset dementia, and both men are aware this may well be the last trip they’ll take before Tusker is a lot less able to travel. Tusker doesn’t want to become a burden to Sam. Sam wants to see him through to the end. SUPERNOVA is a beautiful, slow paced film full of warmth and sorrow. The actors turn themselves inside out to reveal the hard truths of a tragic situation that too many couples and families have to endure.
