Terry Hunter reviews NEWS OF THE WORLD

After 40 years of acting on screen and two Oscars,Tom Hanks stars in NEWS OF THE WORLD, the first western he’s ever made. It’s an entertaining film featuring two strong performances. At the age of 64 Hanks is as good as ever as a widowed Civil War Veteran in 1870. And his 11 year old co-star, Helena Zengel, playing an abandoned orphan who was raised by Native Americans, just earned a Golden Globe Best Supporting Actress nomination for this film. The filmmaker is talented writer-director Paul Greengrass who’s best known for three Jason Bourne films, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (also starring Hanks), and UNITED 93.
