Terry Hunter reviews SOME KIND OF HEAVEN

A new documentary called SOME KIND OF HEAVEN follows the lives of four people who live in The Villages, a retirement community of 130,000 in central Florida that is advertised as a Disneyland for seniors. The trailer for SOME KIND OF HEAVEN makes you think it will be a comedy. But it’s actually a drama about how the challenges of growing old can be made even harder in such an artificial environment. How director Lance Oppenheim, who’s in his early 20’s, managed to capture so many intimate moments in the lives of the four main characters is a mystery to me. But his unhurried pace and his empathy for older people helped turn this project into a highly satisfying documentary. ($6.99 on Amazon, YouTube, Spectrum on Demand and several other streaming platforms)
