Terry Hunter reviews MANK

The fascinating new Netflix film called MANK tells story of the screenwriter who wrote the original draft of CITIZEN KANE, widely hailed as one of the best movies ever made. MANK stands on its own but it will be best appreciated by people who admire CITIZEN KANE which you can rent for $3.99 on Amazon, YouTube, and Vudu. MANK was the nickname of Herman Mankiewicz, a brilliant writer who was also a self destructive alcoholic and a compulsive gambler. This film about him is likely to earn two Oscar nominations, one for the acting of its star, Gary Oldman, and the other for its rich black and white cinematography that recreates the look of 1941’s CITIZEN KANE, starring Orson Wells who also directed that classic film. MANK is very much a writer’s film, full of sharp wit and clever repartee.
