Terry Hunter reviews UNCLE FRANK (Amazon Prime)

The new movie called UNCLE FRANK on Amazon Prime is a strong drama set in the 1960’s and 70’s, a time when being gay was considered a perversion in most of America. The film tells the heartfelt and realistic story of a gay man living in New York city who must go back to his hometown in South Carolina for his father’s funeral. Back there few people were aware of his sexuality except for his father who had been furious about it. Paul Bettany gives a standout performance as Frank. Some of his story is shown from the point of view of his young niece Beth well played by Sophia Lillis who is convincing at the ages of both 14 and 18. UNCLE FRANK really understands what it was like half a century ago for closeted gays in America. It’s a reminder of how long it’s taken for America to accept the reality of of homosexuality. We still have a long way to go.(AMAZON PRIME)
