Terry Hunter reviews THE LIFE AHEAD

86 year old Sophia Loren, the legendary film actress who won an Oscar as Best Actress more than half a century ago, co-stars with a young boy in the new Netflix film, THE LIFE AHEAD. Loren gives a moving performance as a Holocaust survivor who worked as a streetwalker for many years. Now she earns a meager living taking care of the children of young Italian prostitutes. Her talented co-star is Ibrahima Gueye who plays a troubled orphan from Senegal that Loren’s character is forced to care for. THE LIFE AHEAD has a rather predictable plot and strains credibility toward the end. But overall, it’s a well made film with great acting. Some audiences will find it too sentimental; others will appreciate its bittersweet emotions. (Netflix, 1hr. 34 mins.- directed by Edoardo Ponti, Loren’s real life son)
