Terry Hunter reviews THE OLD GUARD

While theaters are closed, Hollywood has been postponing the release of action-adventure films this summer. But on Netflix there’s a brand new action film worth watching. THE OLD GUARD is a smart, entertaining, character driven action movie directed by a woman (Gina Prince Bythewood) and starring two women: Oscar winner Charlize Theron and emerging star, Kiki Layne. THE OLD GUARD isn’t really a super hero movie, but the small team group of warriors led by Charlize Theron does have one very special ability. They will die eventually and they can be captured, but for hundreds of years they cannot be killed. Charlize Theron plays Andy, the leader of this group of almost immortal warriors. No wonder she’s weary—she’s been a mercenary for more than a thousand years. Her three male companions, for hundreds. Kiki Layne as Niles is the reluctant new member of the group. There’s lots more exciting action in THE OLD GUARD, but what fascinates me is the psychology of these warriors. They have outlived and lost everyone they ever loved. They know that they can be captured and imprisoned for hundreds of years, the punishment one of their earlier members suffered. Plus, unlike so many action heroes, these skilled warriors take no pleasure in killing. (terry.hunter@hawaiinewsnow.com)
