The new ten part Amazon Prime series called THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD is from Oscar winning director, Barry Jenkins (MOONLIGHT). This story about two slaves who escape a Georgia plantation in the 1850’s is being called “a major event in the history of television,” but many viewers will disagree. Four years in the making, the series tells a very powerful story about the atrocities of slavery and the harrowing misadventures of two runaway slaves. As Cora, the daughter of a slave who escaped the plantation, leaving her behind, South African actress Thuso Mbedu gives an astonishingly good performance. The first two episodes are brutally realistic in some scenes and painfully slow, dark and experimental in others. The real Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used by enslaved people to escape to the free states of the north. But here (and in the Pulitzer prize winning novel it’s based on) it’s an actual set of trains running in tunnels. I don’t understand this use of magical realism. It may be artistic, but why insert a myth into an otherwise accurate recreation of historical conditions? THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD is the ambitious work of a fine director in command of all his skills, but it’s almost torturous to watch.

The new movie called REBOOT CAMP is a comedy that won the audience award for best feature film at the Maui Film Festival a few months ago. It’s a clever and really funny mockumentary, a fully scripted feature film comedy that pretends to be a documentary about two brothers who start a fake self help group. Their purpose is to make a documentary about the group that will show how easy it can be for unscrupulous gurus to manipulate people and earn lots of money. REBOOT CAMP is both entertaining and thought provoking as it sheds light on how quickly people can be drawn into cults without understanding what’s really happening to them. ($3.99 on Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, etc.)
