Terry Hunter reviews PALM SPRINGS

PALM SPRINGS (streaming on Hulu) is a hilarious, wildly inventive romantic comedy about two people who meet at a destination wedding where they’re caught in an infinite time loop and forced to experience that same wedding day over and over. It may sound too much like Bill Murray’s GROUNDHOG DAY, but I assure you it’s fresh and funny—a real pleasure to watch. Andy Samberg plays Nyles, a free spirit who at the reception flirts from the dance floor with Christin Milioti as Sarah, the unhappy sister of the bride. When she eventually decides to spend some time with Nyles, they go off into the desert at night where someone shoots an arrow into Nyles, and to escape, he drags himself into a cave. Nyles yells for her not to come into the cave. But she enters anyway and gets sucked into the same time loop that Nyles has already been experiencing for who knows how many days. And that’s just the setup….Thanks to the chemistry of these two talented and likable actors plus the constant surprises of the clever script, I had more fun watching PALM SPRINGS than any other movie I’ve seen this year.
