Our Hawaiian word of the day is "Lāʻau". The word Lā'au is defined as any type of plant growing from the earth; any tree, shrub or grass. Lā'au is also defined as any medicine that you take to prevent and to treat any physical ailments. Used in an 'ōlelo no'eau: "He lā'au ka 'ai", this is translated as "Food is medicine". Our kūpuna knew that food was the best medicine for your body. He lā'au ka 'ai reminds us that food or 'ai is the foundation for good health. With a healthy diet of foods from our land and seas it is no surprise that foreigners who arrived in Hawai'i were impressed with the healthy physique of our people. When our ancestors did suffer from different ailments, kahuna lā'au lapa'au or medicinal doctors would gather medicinal plants using the proper prayers and protocols to heal the patients.
