Terry Hunter reviews DA 5 BLOODS

DA 5 BLOODS is an intense and powerful movie about black veterans who fought in Viet Nam and how the trauma of that tragic war affected the rest of their lives. The film is a history lesson, an action-adventure film, and a devastating drama with a stunning Oscar worthy performance by 67 year old Delroy Lindo. The movie begins with a montage of clips from half a century ago and then jumps to the present when four black vets excitedly re-unite in what used to be Saigon. They’ve come back to recover the body of Norman, their fallen squadron leader and to find the trunk full of gold bars they buried during the war. DA 5 BLOODS is long (2 hours and 34 minutes) and a bit overstuffed. Not everything works, but most of it does. This is one of the year’s best films so far. terryhunter70@hotmail.com
