Terry Hunter reviews DRIVEWAYS

DRIVEWAYS is a bittersweet drama about a struggling single mother, her shy young son, and a lonely old widower they gradually become friends with. When a producer gave the original script to Andrew Ahn, a Korean-American director, he asked if he could change the Caucasian mother and son to Asian-Americans. The producer said “yes,” and the result is this heartfelt gem of a movie that is also the farewell performance of the great character actor, Brian Dennehy, who died last month at the age of 81. The film tells a simple human story of human kindness. It’s gentle but powerful, wise about the problems of real people. The acting is exceptional; the original score is perfect.
